Troutbeck

We were very lucky to have a window of dry weather in between the snow during the preceding week and the rain and hail that came afterwards. The day was overcast, but the grey clouds did not reduce the hashers’ enthusiasm.  Assembling at the Mortal Man, we were joined by a large cohort from Cockermouth Hash, which swelled our ranks nicely.

Those of us who are used to Highway’s trails were pleasantly surprised by the generous use of flour, the frequency of markings, and the well-stocked buckets at the beer stop. Well done, that man! The nature nerds among us spotted a snake’s head fritillary, a bank of dog violets, primroses, and a buzzard being mobbed by crows, at various points along the trail. We expected a nature quiz at the end of the run, but no questions were forthcoming.

Committed Rambos had a long, hilly split, but it was all worth it for the lovely views on the run back to the pub. As we finished much later than expected, there was no circle, but an undignified rush to get into the pub. The food was excellent, although marred somewhat by the long (AN HOUR!) wait after ordering. We could have had that circle after all!

Many thanks go to Highway and Chemical Alley for providing superb countryside, lovely views and great company.
