Nineteen happy hashers congregated at the very lovely venue of YHA Eskdale to celebrate the Coming of Age of LVH3. This included 6 hashers who are founding members and r*n on the very first hash- FB, B, M, L , HD, and PMU - all looking remarkably non ancient!
After a Jacob’s Join of soup and cake we all set off enthusiastically into the dark and wet of the upper Esk valley, collecting several hashers who opted to stay the weekend at one of the On Inns- the Woolpack.
All going well. ‘Til that early turning off L with a prominent flour blob. Our stalwart Rambos set off hot footed, enjoying a lovely riverside trail…… til it faltered. Was it those darned flour eating sheep, the flour erasing rain or just a hare mean with his flour? We milled around in the dark and rain ‘til LP found a lone flour blob in the distance. Off the Rambos happily went again……. but then encountered the first backward facing arrow. Oh.
OK, let’s do it backwards. We’ve come too far to backtrack. Thus the OnOn trail became the NoNo trail with many a backwards scan to check route accuracy.
The hare WTS was dutifully sitting in the BS car expecting hashers to appear from Boot, only to find them r*nning straight past the car in t’other direction. As they dithered at the next check he had to come r*nning after them to call them back to the BS.
Rambos continued on tentatively, but with a reassuringly known end point of the bup, across sdleif, over hidden selits, and through setag on the NoNo trail.
They suddenly encountered the Wimps, muttering darkly about multidirectional arrows. They too had done a forwards/ backwards segment but had at least found at last the correct route. The lure of the pub however tempted them into a short cut back along the road.
A further intrepid subsection of Rambos- FB, B and TF- splintered off on the NoNo trail and only reappeared sometime after the main hash pack was comfortably ensconced at the Woolpack with beers. Poor TF. This was to be her only 21st birthday hash weekend experience as a cockup on the rota front meant that she had to drive the 4h back to Scotland early next morning.
So, a great time was had by all. Thanks to WTS and STT for setting it, WTS for flourage .Not a single one of us did it properly!
