This was our 2nd visit. We also visited on...
Aa proper village pub, full of character, with a mean cocktail list, local cask ales, great craft beers and delicious comfort food.
As I arrived late and then had to change out of my bike leathers, I was still running down the hill towards the start as everyone else was setting off. I thought I would struggle to catch up, but Baldbrick took pity on me and arranged to have a nasty accident so that I wasn’t left behind. Thunderdick sprinted back to the start to fetch the car for the invalid, and we all resumed the run.
The day was perfect, lovely sunny weather and beautiful countryside with fantastic views. The kind hares put in an extra beer stop at Brigsteer Church, and Lo and behold! who was that motoring casually up the road towards us but the wounded Baldbrick, looking much better by now.
We travelled across Scout Scar in brilliant sunshine, reaching the viewpoint for our second beer stop. Lurch had heroically carried cans of soft drinks and a big bottle of water from the car park to the viewpoint, but he had somehow forgotten to bring any cups or actual beer! We paused for a while to enjoy the view, then set off on the last section back along the Scar, down into the valley and through the woods back to Brigsteer.
There were down-downs for Baldbrick for hash-crash and animal abuse (Harry was the cause of the accident), and for Thunderdick, but I can’t remember what his sins were. The two Virgins, Pond Life and Roadkill were named. Then came the awful moment. Lurch announced that the pub had stopped serving food at 1 o’clock, and that Baldbrick had already had a pint and a roast dinner. We decided to go down the road to the Hare and Hounds at Levens, where we satisfied our hunger and thirst. I thought that I might get away with arriving late and kept quiet, but no, at the last minute Lurch dobbed me in as scribe.
